White stoneware, sprayed black engobe, Black crawl glaze, 19' x 10' x 10'
2025
Thrown in two sections, then faceted, paddled, and scraped by hand, O·W·L traces three moments of erosion in a single form. The foot stays pale and stratified, like clay still compressed underground. The middle band swells beneath a scorched crawl glaze, its cracked skin echoing fire-blackened timber forced outward by heat. At the rim, the clay stretches and tears, as though seized and lifted from the earth. Compression, combustion, and rupture, three passages of time, revealed in one vessel.

This piece began as a wheel-thrown form, then was carved and sculpted using the traditional Japanese kurinuki technique. Each mark was made by hand, embracing irregularities and drawing from the erosion and quiet drama of natural stone. The surface - rough in places, softened in others - carries the impression of time, as if shaped by the elements rather than by tools.
